Teaser Tuesday Drabbles

Hello, lovelies,

For Teaser Tuesday this week, I thought I'd do something a little different and give you two drabbles. These aren't a part of any particular story. They're simply little scenes that go with images I stumbled across somewhere online. Maybe one day the story behind the scenes will appear. :)

Enjoy!

Forever

"I love you," he whispered, wrapping his arms around me when I stepped up between his legs.

He lifted his hooded gaze to mine. Emotion he never showed me blazed in the clear blue depths of his eyes like storm clouds roiling. Everything I wanted hung there, but nowhere near enough of it.

"Show me," I said, needing more from him in that moment than spoken professions and unguarded looks. I needed forever as only he could give it to me. I needed his lips on mine and his heart pounding for me. Only for me.

"Always for you," he promised as if he'd plucked the thought from the depths of my mind.

His lips parted, sliding over mine like warm silk.

For the first time in days, forever didn't seem so impossible after all.

It seemed right.

* * *

Rain

Water falls in thick drops, sliding off his skin and onto mine. It's cool where it lands, little spots of relief on overheated skin. I barely feel it. Blades of winter roughened bark scrape at my back, but I don't feel those either. All I feel is him surrounding me… and he is everywhere.

My heart races beneath the tips of his fingers, pounding out a chorus of yeses as he slides his hands down my sides. He hasn't even kissed me yet, and I'm in heaven. Overwhelmed by him… his touch, his scent, the hitch of his breath.

I'm burning everywhere. Not even the rain pouring down around us eases the intense ache.

His hair drips in my face, and he sighs. The sound is reverent, worshipful… full of relief and need in turns.

Please, I beg, needing him in ways I can't even begin to describe.

He doesn't disappoint.

He dips his head, lapping a bead of water from my collarbone. My back arches, pushing me closer to him. Drops of water steam where he presses kisses into my throat. My heart thumps wildly against his fingertips one final time before he slides them downward, exploring my damp skin, driving me crazy.
My legs tremble beneath me. Each time his hands slip lowers, another soft gasp whispers from my lips. Every flick of his tongue drives my pulse rate higher. I can't wait any longer and he knows it.

He grasps my sides, pulling me up, twining my legs around his hips.

I cry out as his mouth descends on mine, his tongue twining around mine.

Pleasure rushes over me, rushes through me. I feel the water this time… inside, outside… everywhere.

Just like he said I would.

xoxo,
Ayden

The Great and Powerful Theme Reveal #atozchallenge #giveaway

Dearest Readers,

Imagine for a moment, if you will, the wilds of times long ago and far away.

The sun breaks on the horizon ahead as you and your closest grasp your swords and run, screaming into battle. Sweat and other questionable bodily fluids drip down your face... your arms... your legs. You hurl javelins and spears whilst those fighting beside you plow on massive steeds through the ranks of those rising up against you.

When darkness falls on the battlefield, you stand as defiant as you are exhausted. You've lost friends this day, but you didn't give in or surrender. You fought for the right to rule... and it brought you here. To this moment and this truce. You spit into the vat at your feet, weary, wary... but alive.

Between one breath and the next, the scene before you vanishes.

The craggy, snow-capped Caucasus Mountains rise around you like massive fingers reaching toward the heavens. You peer from the mouth of a cave high up on Mount Kazbeck, stunned into silence as a vicious bird wheels over a young man laying defenseless on the rocks. He thrashes, pleading with the Gods for their forgiveness. You're so high up, for a moment, you think the Gods might hear him. They might answer. But they don't. They have no mercy for a man such as this. A traitor. A thief.

The bird plummets toward the young man, sinking his claws into the poor bastard's flesh. You slap your hands over your eyes, unwilling to watch the poor man's destruction. And yet... you can't help but peek between your fingers, staring in horror as the beast rips through his flesh and begins to devour his entrails.

What macabre scene is this, you wonder?

But your only answer is the pitiful cries of that poor fool bound to a hell unlike any you've ever witnessed before.

You click your heels three times, hoping the magic bestowed upon young Dorothy has somehow found its way into the soles of your hiking boots...

Everything blurs and fades.

Did it work?!

You whip your head around, desperately seeking your bed.

But it's nowhere to be found. Instead, you stand, inexplicably, at the lip of a great, cosmic ocean. Gods and demons surround you, and for this one moment, they work together, agitating the starry waters as one mighty force. A great mist arises from the depths, creeping toward Earth like a living, breathing wall of fog.

The Gods despair until one brave deity rises up and sucks the noxious fumes into his mouth. He begins to choke, gasping and clawing for air. A Goddess rushes forth and wraps her arms around his neck. She squeezes, shaking him as if all the world depends upon it.

With that great ocean seething behind him... his throat turns blue. He takes a breath. And then another.

What sorcery is this?!

You rush forward to demand answers...

But the landscape changes around you. Again and again, you stand, transfixed, as the most wondrous things happen around you. Gods are born. Alliances fail. The world trembles and grows dark. You're awe-struck as tales of old take shape around you.

Twenty-six of them, in fact. One after another.

Can you imagine such a magical, mystical place?

I can, dear readers. I can!

And if you'll join me right here on April 1st... you can take that fantastical journey with me right through the heart of mythology. I'll introduce you to Gods and Goddess, to Giants and Dwarves, and all those beautiful, tragic things that make such tales a brilliant, timeless (and sometimes terrifying) part of our history.

See you then, fellow travelers.

Ayden

Myth or Monster Monday: Tuatha Dé Danann

Tuatha Dé Danann, Artist Unknown
Since today is St. Patrick's Day, I thought it fitting that our myth come from the Irish. So I present to you the Tuatha Dé Danann.

The Tuatha Dé Danann (meaning tribes of the goddess Danu) are the mythical beings. They are descended from Neimheadh and came to Ireland from Falias, Finias, Gorias, and Murias. When they arrived in Ireland, according to some, darkness settled over the land for three long days and nights.

The Tuatha Dé Danann brought with them the incredible magic they had picked up in Falias, Finias, Gorias, and Murias. They also brought one treasure from each of their cities... the Spear of Lugh, the Dagda's Cauldron, the Sword of Light of Nuada, and the Stone of Fal. These four treasures granted the Tuatha Dé Danann immense power...  No battle was ever waged against the one who held the Spear of Lugh, no one escaped from the Nuada's sword once it was drawn, Dagda's Cauldron satisfied all who partook of it, and the Stone of Fal helped crown the rightful king of Ireland by crying out when said king placed his feet upon it. Fal's Stone also granted the king a long life.

During their reign in Ireland, the Tuatha Dé fought three immense battles. In the first Nuada lost an arm before eventually being restored to the crown. In the second, Nuada was slain and Lugh took over as King. The third battle, against the Milesians, proved to be their last. After Lugh declared a truce in the third battle, the Tuatha Dé Danann attempted to drive the Milesians away to no avail. They came to shore and defeated the Tuatha Dé Danann. When the Milesian then divided the land between their people and the Tuatha Dé Danann, they did so cleverly... laying claim to all above ground while giving the Tuatha Dé Danann dominion underground.

Some claim the Tuatha Dé Danann still reside in the Sidhe mounds throughout Ireland, invisible to humans but very much evident in our world. Today, the Tuatha Dé Danann are called the Aes Sidhe (or Aos Sí)... the Fae. Only iron can injure these supernatural creatures, and, when the cause is just, you just might find them joining alongside humans in battle.

If you ever have the opportunity to read up on the Tuatha Dé Danann or the Sidhe, I highly recommend doing so. What I've relayed here is just a brief overview. There is such an immense cache of lore out there on these mythical folk, and it is absolutely fascinating. I cannot think of another culture who bring mythology to life quite like the Irish do.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, loves. Celebrate safely!

Ayden

Write drunk, edit sober... plot drugged?

I caught the stomach plague early this week, and it is been clinging for all it's worth. I dehydrated fast, so on Wednesday afternoon, SS dragged me to the doctor for fluids and drugs. I don't like to take medication that makes me sleep because it tends to give me horrific nightmares, but actual sleep wasn't exactly happening without them (and let's face it... even nightmares are preferable to violent projectile vomiting every time you move, right? Right.) so I've been taking them religiously.

Each time I manage to sleep for a few hours, I've had the same crazy dream about a little boy who vanishes into thin air, the older sister who moves heaven and earth to bring him home again, and the not-quite-human new boy across the street whose very existence is on the line. (Don't you love intentional vagueness?)

Yesterday, when the projectile vomiting had more or less stopped, I decided to drag myself to work for a few hours before the boss sent out a search party. I sat at my desk and did absolutely nothing but pray for a time wrap Googled the name of the creature he gave me (or gave to Samara in my dream... whatever).

How strange that it actually exists! In mythology, people. It exists in mythology. Not in the real world. Because that'd be too much crazy.

Of course, I probably read about said creature in all of my mythology research and just don't remember it in my current state. But I've decided this can only mean one thing: I absolutely must write this story! I mean, something good damn well better come out of vomiting so much I can't move without every muscle in my body throbbing in protest. I refuse to believe the Universe is cruel enough to inflict such misery without including a silver lining somewhere.

After realizing the creature actually exists (in the myths), I decided I'd better start jotting notes before the drugs wore off and I forgot what the hell I needed to remember.

In between bouts of sleep today, I've managed to plot the whole story out.... which is admittedly not hard to do when you've just watched it play out from start to finish about fifteen times in a row. But whatever. This is destiny, dammit!

I have no idea if my outline makes any sense or not, but I'm really excited to put the story on paper. Just as soon as I get FLAME written, and Stricken and Rhapsody edited...

Jesus. I need to win the lottery. I don't have enough hours in the day to write and work and keep the house from turning into an actual Zoo.

Maybe this one will be my NaNo project for the year.

I'm going back to bed.

xoxo,
Ayden

Teaser Tuesday: Rhapsody (The Teplo Files: Two) #nsfw

Hello, lovelies!

I have another teaser from the Teplo Files for you. I've sent the first book of the trilogy, Ravished, off to the beta team to see what they think about where I decided to end it. While they work their magic, I've been editing through the second book (tentatively titled Rhapsody). This particular teaser comes from there and is probably NSFW. Unless your boss doesn't mind you reading naughtiness... in which case I'd like to be your new coworker, please. ;)

Enjoy!

Lillian stopped mid-stretch when she caught sight of Tristan, her cheeks turning that dusty rose color he loved.
"Hey," she mumbled, averting her gaze.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Liar." He frowned, stepping into the room. No way did she get to go back to half-truths and evasions now.
She huffed, lifting her head. "It's nothing. I just didn't realize you were there."
"So?" he asked, not seeing her point.
"It's weird." She grimaced, her hands fluttering at her sides.
Tristan pursed his lips.
Lillian avoided his gaze, instead smoothing an invisible wrinkle in her leotard. The blush in her cheeks deepened.
Why was she embarrassed?
"Talk to me, beautiful."
She hesitated a moment. "Once a month, Madame Goffe would open our practices to the kids studying at the school associated with the Company. Those who performed well during the week would line up along the walls and watch us warm up, imaging themselves in our positions." She frowned, a soft sigh stirring the fine hairs framing her face. "No one except my therapist has watched me stretch since."
"I love watching you move," he murmured.
"I'm not very graceful," she said, her gaze flitting down to rest on her scar and then away. "Not anymore."
He hated the sad, shamed smile twisting at her lips.
Striding across the room to her, he held his hand out. "Come here," he requested.
She bit her lip, debating, and then reached for his hand.
Getting her up from the floor took no effort at all.
Once she had her feet beneath her, he turned her until her back rested against her chest.
She stood tense and rigid against him, but that didn't matter. Fingers of heat still wound their way through him.
"I like having you in my arms," he leaned in to whisper in her ear.
She tilted her head to the side, granting him access to the side of her neck.
"What's this song?" he asked when she relaxed a little, letting him support her weight.
"It's from Giselle. Do you know the story?"
"No." He brushed his lips across her ear, causing her to shiver. "Tell me."
"It's a romantic ballet about jealousy, deception, forgiveness, and transcendent love," she said as he slid his hands from her waist onto her rib cage. "Giselle is the most beautiful woman in her village, which causes Duke Albrecht and Hilarion, the gamekeeper, to fall in love with her. But the Duke is betrothed to a princess and knows he can never truly have Giselle. In an act of sheer desperation, he disguises himself as a peasant to get close to her. His plan works, and Giselle falls deeply in love with him. Whenever he pays her call, they dance together. Their love is so apparent; the village youth join in their dances, filling the village with joy.
"When Hilarion sees this dance, he realizes he's lost Giselle to Albrecht. His jealousy spirals out of control and he vows to find out what the Duke is hiding so he can tear them apart, thus allowing him to win her affections for himself."
Tristan listened with half an ear to her explanation, focusing instead on the way her body moved beneath his hands. When he shifted, so did she, her body adjusting to him without conscious thought. Whether the subtle movements were some left over ballerina instinct or a natural response to him didn't matter. He loved them either way.
Her heart hammered against his fingertips.
"And then what happens?" He pulled her earlobe into his mouth and nipped, a little demand that she let go of her anxiety and relax. Inching his way across her ribs, he rubbed tantalizing circles beneath her breasts, teasing both of them in the process.
Lillian groaned, attempting to arch into his touch. "Hilarion eventually unmasks the Duke," she said when Tristan refused to obey that unspoken plea and kept his hands right where they were, "but Giselle has fallen so madly in love with him that Hilarion's plan to win her backfires. When she realizes she and the Duke can never truly be together, she goes mad. The dance she once shared with him becomes something else, something darker.
"Albrecht watches her, heartbroken that his deception has caused her such immense pain. He pleads for her forgiveness, but it's too late. She grabs his sword and stabs herself with it, unable to bear the heartbreak and humiliation he's thrust upon her. She dies in her mother's arms, leaving the Duke utterly destroyed."
In reward for continuing, Tristan let his fingertips graze the undersides of her breasts through the thin, form-fitting fabric.
Almost instantly, her breath began to hitch.
Hiding a smirk, Tristan planted his lips against her throat, licking and sucking.
"And then what, beautiful?" he whispered against her skin, once more completely captivated by her. Her scent, her taste, the way she moved, and the breathless moans whispering from her lips layered one atop the other, stoking to life that brilliant burn for more… The one he felt every single time he touched her.
"They… Ah…." she groaned as he sucked at her throat, pulling her skin between his teeth momentarily before letting go.
"Tell me," he said, moving on to the fading marks he'd left upon her two nights before. The faint spots were all but gone now, and the desire to replace them gnawed at him. Something deep inside him liked the thought of leaving his mark on her, right there where everyone would see it and know she belonged with him.
At the moment, he didn't really care what that primal desire said about him.
"They bury Giselle in a glade haunted by the Wilis, spirits of wronged virgins who lure men to their deaths," Lillian said. "She becomes one of them. When Hilarion goes looking for her grave one night in grief over what he's caused, the Wilis force him to dance until he dies. This… Oh God…" she moaned when Tristan let his fingers climb higher, no longer teasing the undersides of her breasts, but cupping them fully in his hands.
"This what, beautiful?" His question came out sounding as strained as her whisper, his teasing killing them both, but damned if that would stop him. Now that he'd been all over her, on top of her, inside of her… he wasn't sure he could stop touching her.
She didn't seem to mind his predicament.
"Music-" she broke off as he traced her nipples with a single fingertip on each, making light circles around the hardened flesh poking through the thin fabric.
"What about it?"
"It's from that scene. It's his final – Oh, sweet Jesus – dance. His death."
Tristan rewarded her once more by rolling her nipples between his fingers.
Her head fell back against his shoulder.
"Giselle doesn't save him?" he asked, barely about to force the words out. He was hard as a rock, and dying to bend her over the little table and plunge his cock into her until she shattered around him.
Trying to remind himself that she needed a break didn't help much.
"No." Lillian moaned again when he sucked the pulse point in her throat, biting and then soothing it with his tongue exactly like he had so many times before.
"Keep going, Lillian," he murmured, kissing a trail across her shoulder.
"She doesn't save him. Her ghost is with the Duke when Hilarion enters the glade, so she doesn't even know he's there. No one knows if she would have saved him had she been able to do so. His jealousy was the catalyst for her greatest pain, and the Duke's greatest loss. But she saves the Duke despite his deception, because her love for him transcended even death and her new position as a Wilis. She never got that- Oh God, Tristan. Please…."
Tristan smiled, triumphant, when her concentration shattered, her body going limp against him just as he'd wanted. She arched into his eager hands, pressing her ass into his cock.
"Close your eyes, beautiful," he whispered and set to work on her leotard, peeling it down her arms until her breasts spilled free of the restricting material.
Her eyes fluttered closed as the music reached a fevered pitch around them, swelling and receding as, presumably, Hilarion's forced dance swept him closer and closer to death.
Tristan pulled Lillian back against him and shifted until his hips cradled hers on either side.
He snaked one hand around her waist to guide her as the other rose to tease at her breasts again. Her head rolled against his shoulder, a moan breaking from her lips, as he began to rock her body side to side with his own in a dance as shattering as Hilarion's, but for an entirely different reason.
Death awaited that jealous fool.
Ecstasy awaited Lillian.

                                                                  * * * * *

I shared this on Facebook last night, but wanted to share it here, too. This is Hilarion's dace from Giselle (performed by Kazuo Kimura and the Tokyo Ballet) referenced in this scene. It's one of my favorite performances. If you ever get the opportunity to attend a performance of Giselle, go!

KIYA: Rise of a New Dynasty by @KatieTeller1: Spotlight and #giveaway

Summary: Tut has grown into his position as Pharaoh, but he is a wild young man. Naomi fears for him, not only because of his recklessness, but because he has put his trust in Ay–the man determined to destroy Naomi—despite her and Horemheb advising against it.
Meanwhile, death and slavery hang over Naomi and her family. With fear of the booming Hebrew numbers causing talk of enslaving them, conscription is reinstated and Naomi fears for the lives of her other children. Especially since Ay's children are now adults, and just as dangerous as their father. They threaten to take Itani, conspire against Tut, and push for power.
But Tut is in trouble. While Ay's daughter draws Horemheb's attention, and Naomi deals with the struggles of her family, everyone's distraction could spell death for the young Pharaoh.

Cover Reveal! Destruction by @SharonBayliss #decemberpeople

Author Sharon Bayliss is thrilled to share the cover for Destruction (Book One of The December People Series), a family drama about dark wizards living in Houston. Destruction will release on 4/14/14 from Curiosity Quills Press.

Message from Sharon Bayliss:

"The butterfly will show up on the cover of all four books in the series, as a symbol of redemption, hope, and re-birth. Despite the dark themes in the series, I believe that the most important themes of the series are hopeful ones, such as love, family, and triumph against adversity, which is why the butterfly is in the center.

The broken glass surrounding the butterfly rather obviously symbolizes the concept of destruction, which is also a central theme. The title Destruction refers to the fact that dark magic is inherently destructive, but also refers to how a person can be destroyed, in body or soul.

One thing I was sure of, I wanted the word, Destruction, to be in "pretty" letters. I loved the contrast of having a dark and violent word look beautiful. This also fits the theme, as I wish to show the beauty in darkness and destruction, and the good in people who are supposed to be evil."

Summary:

David Vandergraff wants to be a good man. He goes to church every Sunday, keeps his lawn trim and green, and loves his wife and kids more than anything. Unfortunately, being a dark wizard isn't a choice.

Eleven years ago, David's secret second family went missing. When his two lost children are finally found, he learns they suffered years of unthinkable abuse. Ready to make things right, David brings the kids home even though it could mean losing the wife he can’t imagine living without.

Keeping his life together becomes harder when the new children claim to be dark wizards. David believes they use this fantasy to cope with their trauma. Until, David's wife admits a secret of her own—she is a dark wizard too, as is David, and all of their children.

Now, David must parent two hurting children from a dark world he doesn’t understand and keep his family from falling apart. All while dealing with the realization that everyone he loves, including himself, may be evil.
