FADE EXCERPT:

Prologue

December 9, 2009

The wind howled around me, flinging cold rain this way and that. Frigid drops stung my face and hands. The vinyl awning overhead shook and rattled in time to the thunderclaps echoing from every direction. Energy crackled in the air as lightning splintered trees miles away. The resulting clamor forced Reverend Don to shout just to be heard above the fury of the storm. Even so, I only caught every third or fourth word of the prayer he offered.

I didn't need to hear what he said anyway. There were no prayers to raise the dead. I knew because I'd tried. I'd begged, pleaded, and prayed to every god I could think of over the last four days, and none of my efforts changed a single thing.

My mom still lay in the gleaming wood casket in front of me. And I still couldn't breathe. I'd tried that for the last four days, too, but my breath felt lodged in my throat. It burned when I inhaled. It burned when I exhaled.

Was that normal?

I wasn't sure.

I lifted my eyes from my waterlogged, black shoes as Reverend Don continued shouting. He bowed his gray head over his Bible, his shoulders hunching against the driving rain pummeling us from all sides. The few mourners who'd braved the storm alongside my dad and me to attend the graveside service huddled in groups beneath useless umbrellas, soggy tissues clutched in their shaking fists. Mascara ran in rivulets down more than one face, but whether from the rain or tears, I didn't know.

I couldn't remember if I'd put on mascara before leaving the house, but I did know any smudges beneath my eyes were from rain. I hadn't cried yet, and I didn't know if that was normal either.

I didn't think it mattered one way or another though. My life stopped making sense the moment I'd opened the door to the state trooper on Saturday, and every hour since had flung me further and further from normal. Who cared if I cried now or later?

My mom was dead, and tears wouldn't change that.

Besides, if I let myself cry now, I wouldn't stop. I'd keep on until I ran out of tears, and I couldn't do that. I needed to keep moving forward. One step at a time. Sprinkle dirt over her coffin. Thank her friends for coming. Pack my things. Transfer colleges.

The list seemed endless, but if I stopped long enough to think now, I'd fall apart. Eventually, I'd run out of things to do, I knew that, but I didn't know what to expect when I did. When I had nothing left to plan or store or do . . . is that when I cracked? When I shattered like Humpty Dumpty?

As a murmur of "Amen" went up from Mom's friends and co-workers, I almost hoped I did get to fall apart then. Being strong and brave hurt. Especially when I just wanted to hit my knees and scream until I passed out.

But when do we ever really get what we want, anyway?

Dad's hand tightened around mine, and I glanced in his direction. He stared straight ahead, his brown eyes fixed on Mom's casket. I followed the path his gaze had taken, only to realize he wasn't looking at her casket at all. His eyes were trained on the far side of the cemetery, at the line where the plots stopped and the trees started.

I squinted through the rain, trying to pinpoint what held his attention.

A lone wolf hunkered beneath the trees.

A wolf?

I blinked, certain I hadn't seen an animal at all, but I had. A wolf, or the domestic relation anyway, sat in the shadows of the trees, staring in our direction. Even from a distance, he looked as sad as I felt, and I wondered if he'd lost a loved one too.

Do animals feel loss like us? Do they grieve, too?

I hoped not.

As the wind picked up around us, the animal's eyes met mine. He didn't move for a moment. He just sat there with his sad, wolfy eyes locked on mine. And then he lifted his muzzle skyward and howled.

Goose bumps broke out along my skin as his mournful wail ripped through the cemetery. Reverend Don's voice, the sniffles and muffled sobs of Mom's friends, even the crash and clatter of thunder and lightning faded.

The lump in my throat dissolved, and I could breathe.

I didn't feel peaceful or better or anything remotely close to unburdened. I felt . . . wrecked. As if listening to his call shook loose a little grief that had been building for the last few days. Everything inside, all of the hurt and fear I hadn't allowed myself to think about, expanded. Grief swept through me like a tsunami, leaving nothing untouched.

A tear slipped down my cheek, followed by another.

The wolf's howl lingered in the air around us for long moments before the storm renewed its assault. Lightning flashed in the distance, and the sound of his howl faded into the screeching wind.

The animal turned his head in my direction, looking right at me again. Yellow eyes locked on mine, burning through me, speaking to me.

My heart twisted painfully in my chest, the truth hitting me like a ton of bricks.

My mom was never coming back. Not ever.

My vision blurred until the wolf looked like little more than a watery spot far off in the distance. "I love you, mama," I whispered, hoping she'd heard me.

The animal sat there for another moment, watching me, and then he slipped back beneath the shadows of the tree. I watched him go through tear-filled eyes, my heart aching in ways I couldn't even begin to describe.

Reverend Don loomed in front of me as I reached up to wipe my eyes, his wrinkled face a mask of sympathy and support. He extended one of his hands in my direction, his Bible clutched to his chest with the other.

I glanced over at my dad, but his eyes were closed, and his head bowed. A line of moisture worked its way down his cheek, and I knew that even if Mom hadn't heard me, he had.

"Arionna?"

I hesitated, not ready for what came next. I was only nineteen . . . why did I have to say goodbye to her now? How was this fair? I looked back at her coffin, and then at the broken expression on my dad's face. My hands trembled in my lap.

Dad reached over to squeeze my fingers. "Love you, Ari," he whispered.
I rose from my seat, a sob building in my throat.

Interview with C.M. Brown, Author of He Came for Mine #blogtour

Hello, beautiful people!

Today, the lovely C.M. Brown has stopped by to chat about her recent release, He Came for Mine (The Protectors of Aidensdein, Book Two).

Fending for herself for almost two years, Jazz worries she will never see Sebastian again. A new man enters her life, but he holds a secret.

Will Jazz trust him?

~~

Sebastian discovers an ancient ritual which must be performed on the Chosen One's son before his first birthday, or he will die.

He returns to Earth to find Jazz in the arms of another man.

A man he knows very well.
A man he does not trust....

~~~
Haven't read He Came for Me (Book One) yet? No worries; I have the details so you can grab a copy of it, too.
Jazz, lives on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, in Queensland, Australia. She leads a normal teenage life busy with friends, TAFE College, a part time job as a waitress, surfing and searching for a boyfriend! Until one day driving on her way to TAFE she is passed by a red Mazda Rx7. The driver holds her attention and as they both wait at a set of traffic lights to change to green, a sexual tension passes between them. In the days that follow she finds that this guy moves into her life as she befriends him, his friends and family! But are Seb and his friends what they seem to be? A fantasy novel revolving around a love story between two young people, who should not by rights, come together. Crossing the dimensions of two worlds, this story embarks on a journey of love, duty and togetherness as the two young lovers fight to be together and keep each other safe. Overcoming many obstacles while fighting to protect one another this story will leave the reader intrigued and wondering what will happen next!
I have to stop the presses right here for just a moment to say that I'm already in love with Sebastian. Seriously, the man has nice taste in cars! On with the interview!
Please tell us about yourself in fifty words or less.
I live in Queensland, Australia on the Sunshine Coat. I am happily married and have two children who are almost adults.
I work in the education industry supporting high school students with learning difficulties. I have a passion for reading and writing and am particularly fascinated with the paranormal genre.
What can readers expect from He Came for Mine?
Unlike book one, He Came For Mine is full of turmoil for Jazz. She needs to make some hard decisions and takes on new directions in her life. Some turn out to be the right ones while others lead to danger.
Whereas most of the story in book one is based on Earth, in this second book, readers are taken to Seb’s home world of Aidensdein, a planet full of fantasy, luxury and ancient customs.
Did you find He Came for Mine easier or more difficult to write than He Came for Me?
Actually, I found both books quite easy to write. Once I felt comfortable with where I wanted to go in the stories, they flowed along well.
What's been the single most empowering piece of advice you've gotten when it comes to writing?
I would have to thank one of my critique partner’s for this information.  His help has been invaluable throughout.
The Protector Series is not only the first books I’ve written, but also the first series. When I began writing book two and sent my first chapters for review to Randy, (my critique partner), he told me I had too much back story, which would be boring to read for my audience.
So, I took this advice onto broad shoulders and culled quite a bit, which made for a tighter story line.
What's been your most challenging writing moment to date?
Taking on this blog tour?
Lol! This is quite a lot of work and keeping in contact with all parties involved, making sure all the information has been received and ensuring the return favours I have promised have been met, is quite a challenge in the limited amount of time I have to dedicate to my writing as I do have a family and a full time day job!
What's the worst thing you've ever written? The best?
Umm, this question is hard to answer.
Not that I think that I am the greatest writer, but I really could not pin point one particular piece I would feel was the worst one. So, I don’t really know how to answer this.
The story I am working on at present, is most likely the best thing I have ever written, but it is a long way from finished yet.
Do you share any traits or characteristics with your protagonist, Jazz?
Um, I don’t think so, maybe she is a blend of my young adult daughter and some of the students I work with at school.
What made you decide to write New Adult?
I never really made a personal decision to write within this genre. It seems that most things I write tend to have this element within them.
What does a perfect day entail for you?
Hanging out at the beach after the housework is done, either writing or reading a book on my Kindle and music playing through my iPod. I work best this way its private and I am stimulated by my music. Also I have no interruptions, from my cherished, darling children.
In high school you were most likely to ….
Go to university and become an accountant, so glad I didn’t pursue that pathway. Instead, I landed a job in the banking industry and travelled a lot. I spent 5 years travelling and working bar and restaurant jobs around Australia while living in a tent and driving a beat up kombi van this was after I resigned from the bank, when it was overtaken by a bigger co-operation.
I found the love of my life, had my children, re-educated myself and landed the job I have today, which opened up the world of writing to me.
You're stuck on an island... what 3 books would you kill to have with you?
I have so many favourite books. I find this question somewhat difficult to answer. Some type of survival guide would be helpful and I suppose I would have to say the two books I’ve written.
Why did you decide to self publish?
Like most authors today, I was overwhelmed with all the information on hand and did not know how to begin to publish, what I had written.
Lucky for me, I happened to walk into my local council library one day and came across a pamphlet advertising a seminar on self-publishing, by a well-known Australian author.
I booked in and found myself enthralled with her presentation. It was unbiased and presented many different options from Smashwords to the various Amazon publishing sites: Lulu, Create space etc.
Where else can we find you?
What did I get myself into?!
Hello, my lovelies!
Since I've managed to become the queen of not responding to email lately, I figured it was about time for me to sit down and actually let you all know I am still alive. Despite the random drive-by tweets, status updates, and otherwise odd silence, I haven't forgotten you either! In fact, I miss you.
2013 is off to a mad-dash of a start here. I've knocked out about half of my to-do list for the year in the last few weeks.
Fall is nearly complete! I hoped to finish it before the insanity began, but didn't get quite that far. But I am in the home stretch, and we are slowly inching toward the finish line. Less than 10k to go, and I'm pretty dang excited about the plot for this one. You can expect lots of answers, a lot more questions, and maybe even a surprise or two for our wayward TA and his stubborn heroine. :) Woohoo!
My first day at the new job was the 14th. I think I've read every policy ever written in this state, watched every PPT created in the last twenty years in any state, and been assigned every manual to ever put anyone to sleep. But I've spent just as much time out in the field, visiting nursing homes, getting to know my region, and otherwise realizing how much I already love this job. I still hate getting up at 6am. I still have a pile of manuals awaiting my attention, but what's that saying? No pain, no gain? Yeah, that. :)
All in all, I'm thrilled!
I'm still at the old job one day a week, as well. I couldn't leave. I love what I do there. Sadly, working part time on a non-profit budget just doesn't pay student loans fast enough.
We are still packing for our impending move. And it is seriously impending. Three days! Eek. I should really stop finding excuses to not pack about now. But, you know, that's probably not going to happen. Every time I pack a box, I remember why I threw everything out five years ago and just bought new stuff. Packing is awful.
I cannot wait to get to the new place though. Lots more room, and a lot more open space. We're moving from the middle of town to the middle of nowhere. My nearest neighbors are horses. And a massive dog that is, according to the sweet gentleman that lives down the road, still a puppy. The heck are they feeding that thing?! I have a feeling my little bitty dogs and demon cat are not going to be happy to meet their new neighbors. -.-
It's going to be an interesting change for all of us. The new house is 20 minutes from town, and the gentleman across the road hosts pickings in his yard once a month, which is to say a bunch of people get together, drink beer, and play the banjo and guitar in his front yard. I live in the ghetto right now, y'all. The only thing we hear around here are gun shots, arguments, and sirens. No lie.
So yep, lots of new happening here. Including a new car. Yay!
The roads here have been awful since the Christmas Snowpocalypse. The South is in no way, shape, nor form prepared to deal with 10 inches of snow, and it shows. We have massive potholes all over the place, and debris still scattered around. Little Red, Part One was not able to cope. The check engine light came on and no one could figure out why it was on, or why the car was giving off a tar smell. Add two flat tires in two days... one of which blew in one of the worst neighborhoods in Little Rock at 11:30 at night while I was alone, and well, drastic measures had to be taken.
I stole the husband's truck.
Yep, I did it!
When the second tire blew, I had no choice but to pull into a vacant lot and call the husband for a rescue. While on the phone with him, someone decided to pull up beside me and be all creepy. They kept coming back, circling the car with me stranded inside. Scared me to death, so SS promptly got new tires. And I promptly refused to drive the car since no one could tell me why the dang engine light was on and there was no freaking way I was going to deal with that level of scary again. I'm a chicken, and Little Rock is *not* the place you want to be stranded alone after dark if you're a woman.
So I stole his truck for a week. He hated it. And by that I mean, he stomped around and whined for the entire week because he wanted his truck back and I wouldn't relinquish the key until someone fixed my car.
Since no one knew what to fix, last Saturday morning, SS told me to get dressed so we could go buy me a new car for my birthday (yep, I had one of those this month, too!).
Ayden: 1. The Husbinator: 0.
Little Red, Part Deux
Isn't it pretty? I wanted a Camaro, but then I saw this Mustang, and well, Bumblebee is just going to have to wait a while. I like Little Red, Part Deux. So does the husband. He got his truck back, and has a happy, safe wifey again. And, let's be honest, he's freaking loving having a new toy to play with. In the past few days, he's found every excuse possible to get behind the wheel. Seriously. Since when do you have to drive a car to test the windshield wipers?! Or to adjust the seat?!
Silly man.
Anyway, that's the long drawn out story of how I got a new car, and where I've been hiding lately.
I hope 2013 is off to a fabulous, and less busy, start for all of you! And that you will forgive me if you're waiting on email from me that has yet to materialize. I didn't forget. The boxes are just holding me hostage.
xoxo,
Ayden
Ten Rules for Creating a Bucket List with @JamieMAyres #18Things
Happy Monday, loves!
Today, the amazing Jamie Ayres is here to celebrate her new release, 18 Things, and help us create our very own bucket lists. 18 Things released on the 25th from Curiosity Quills Press, and is quickly climbing the charts. If you haven't grabbed your copy yet, you will definitely want to pick it up soon.
Olga Gay Worontzoff thinks her biggest problems are an awful name (after her grandmothers of course) and not attending prom with Conner, her best friend and secret crush since kindergarten.
Then Conner is killed in a freak boating accident and Olga feels responsible. When she downs an entire bottle of pills to deal with the emotional pain, her parents force her into counseling. There, her therapist writes a prescription in the form of a life list titled 18 Things. Eighteen quests to complete the year of her eighteenth birthday.
All she has to do is fire-walk, try out for the cheerleading squad, break a world record, and err . . . go on her first date. Good thing Nate, a new hottie in town, enters her life with perfect timing. He brings the fun factor to her list and helps her discover the beauty and strength inside herself, then complicates things by falling in love with her.
But there's more to Olga’s quests than meets the eye and when her therapist reveals a terrifying secret, her world is shaken.
There’s only one thing she knows for certain: her choices won’t just affect her future, but all eternity.
Let's turn this puppy over to Jamie!
You’ve seen the movie, maybe even read 18 Things (wow, thanks!!) Now you’re all inspired to create your own list *yay* But you have no idea where to even start. Well, have no fear—Jamie Ayres is here! First, let’s start by defining what a bucket list is: something completely personal that each person should do (IMHO). It’s a great reminder that gives an extra boost to live life to the fullest and keep us looking forward, even when life wants to drag us down sometimes. Now then, here are my top 10 rules for creating bucket lists:
1:  Visualize the list as the story of your life. What things have you never gotten around to doing and would be upset about it if you died today?
2. Do not participate in anything that will earn you an ambulance ride at the end of it.
3. . . . or causes the neighbors to call the cops.
4. Practice random acts of kindness with your list. Most people will amaze you at how they pay it forward!
5. Don’t get ‘stage fright.’ Believe in yourself even when nobody else does.
6. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself . . . most people are probably laughing at you already *oh wait, that’s just me;-)*
7. No pain, no gain. You owe it to yourself to see what all the fight is about. See the joy set before you when accomplishing your task.
8. Don’t be afraid to fail on your quest to excellence, but rather, enjoy the journey . . . “If a thing is worth doing at all, it is worth doing badly.”—Gustav Holst
9. Live life to the fullest and stay young at heart . . . “What I look forward to is continued immaturity followed by death.”—Dave Berry
10. Once you achieve your goals, keep writing new ones! “There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” –Oscar Wilde *So as Subway would say, Keep It Fresh!*
Jamie Ayres writes young adult paranormal love stories by night and teaches very young adults as a public school teacher by day. When not at home on her laptop or at school, she can often be found at a local book store grabbing random children and reading to them. So far, she has not been arrested for this. She lives in southwest Florida with her prince charming, two children (sometimes three based on how Mr. Ayres is acting), and a basset hound. She spent her youthful summers in Grand Haven, Michigan and this setting provided the inspiration for her debut novel, 18 Things. She really does have grandmothers named Olga and Gay but unlike her heroine, she's thankfully not named after either one of them. She loves lazy pajama days, the first page of a good book, stupid funny movies, and sharing stories with fantastic people like you. Visit her website at www.jamieayres.com.
18 Things is available at: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo. You can also add 18 Things to your TBR list on Goodreads.
Interview with Vanna Smythe, author of "Decision Maker"
Hello, lovelies!
I have a treat for you today! The lovely Vanna Smythe has stopped by to celebrate her new release, Decision Maker (Anniversary of the Veil, Book Two) with us. I have to confess that I've not yet read the series thanks to that pesky thing called "real life responsibilities", but after reading up on the series, I had to add it to my TBR list.
Decision Maker (Anniversary of the Veil, Book Two) is the second volume in the Anniversary of the Veil fantasy series. It concludes the story started in Protector(Anniversary of the Veil, Book One), but can also be considered a standalone book that you can read at any time. Though it is enhanced by both Book One and the upcoming Book Three.
Kae, a warrior Protector, has followed Princess Issa across the Veil separating two worlds. They were told Issa will be a key player at the Anniversary of the Veil, but have been mislead! Kae will have to make a terrible choice when the Anniversary finally comes. He is the Decision Maker and will have to play a part in a ceremony that will join Issa's Life Force with her Other Half - but in so doing, it could leave her senseless or worse, dead.
As the King fights to find his daughter, as the Priesthood is falling apart; Kae has to decide if he will kidnap the Princess to stop her Joining and force her into a life of unhappiness, or if he will allow her to Join and thereby leave her a mere shell of herself. Meanwhile friends and foes alike are showing only half-truths to both Kae and Issa. They must make the most important decision of a lifetime without enough knowledge. How can they know it will be the right one?
Alternate worlds, warriors, subterfuge, and life changing decisions?! Yes, please! Let's see what Vanna has to share with us today, and then I'll give you all the nitty gritty details so you can add the Veil series to your TBR list, too.
Vanna Smythe is on a quest to become a (bestselling) fantasy author. Right now, it promises to be a dangerous quest, full of questionable, powerful magnates, laced with pitfalls of obligation, and dreams. So it is good that she does not mean to quest thus alone. To keep her company along the way, she has enlisted the help of an incredible cast of characters. For the moment, they are a confident boy who must learn many things anew, a girl who would like nothing more than to live in endless summer, four who wish things were different, and one who will do all to keep things the same.
Q: Please tell us about yourself in fifty words or less.
I’m an aspiring fantasy writer by night, and a journalist and copywriter by night.
Q: What can readers expect from Decision Maker (Anniversary of the Veil, Book 2)?
A lot more action and adventure than in Protector (Anniversary of the Veil, Book 1) and an ending that might surprise some ;)
Q: What is the most nerve wracking part of a new release for you?
The eBook formatting followed closely by the marketing. But the formatting really drives me crazy.
Q: What's been the single most empowering piece of advice you've gotten when it comes to writing?
Don’t strive for absolute perfection, but always do your best.
Q: What's been your most challenging writing moment to date?
The final revision is always the most trying for me. Getting the story written comes quite easily for me, but polishing it up is harder.
Q: What's the worst thing you've ever written? The best?
That’s a tough one. I guess the first draft of Protector was the worst. While I consider the final version of Decision Maker my best work.
Q: What's been the most difficult part of writing the Anniversary of the Veil series?
Learning how to revise effectively. Revision doesn’t come naturally for me and I’ve worked very hard to learn to.
Q: What draws you to fantasy as a reader? As a writer?
Both reasons are the same, I love immersing myself in new, strange and exciting fantasy worlds. I love history, but also magic, and I think fantasy offers the best of both.
Q: What does a perfect day entail for you?
That depends. When I’m writing it’s all about getting a scene perfectly down on paper. When I’m relaxing, I like to take long walks, read a good book or watch a good movie.
Q: In high school you were most likely to ….
Hang out with my friends until all hours ;)
Q: You're stuck on an island... what 3 books would you kill to have with you?
Something by Agatha Christy, Huckleberry Finn, and Harry Potter.
Q: Do you share any traits or characteristics with Issa? Sure, though perhaps not as many as some of my other characters. Issa is a dreamer, just like me, but she also knows what she wants and is not afraid to go out and grab it.
Q: Where else can we find you?
