Favorite Image/Graphics Tools

There are SO MANY graphic resources out there for authors. I'm always finding new and useful tools. Here are some of my favorites for finding stock photos, creating mockups and marketing graphics, and more!

Book Spark - Book Spark is a subscription service to a lot of different tools in one. You get access to their stock photo library, their instant mockup generator (with hundreds of available mockups), book trailer templates, pre-made cover templates, software to create marketing graphics, print and ebook formatting software, and more.

Book Brush- I recently discovered this one and really like it. I've been able to make some really great marketing graphics using their software and templates. The only drawback is that it's a yearly subscription. Sad face.

The Image Apothecary - Seriously one of my absolute favorite places to go to find incredible mockups. They have some absolutely gorgeous options available!

DepositPhotos - Their selection is satisfactory, and they're a lot more affordable than a lot of the other stock photo places out there!

MockupShots - Hundreds of instant mockups that can be used for a myriad of book projects. It's a little pricey, but worth the expense, in my opinion. I use it all the time.

Pixabay - Hundreds of free stock photos.

*MockupShots is the only affiliate link on the list. It's also one of my favorite author tools!

Ignoring Grammar Rules

Happy Writer Wednesday!

One of the most important things you will ever learn as a writer is that some rules were meant to be broken. If every character in your novel acts and sounds exactly the same, you're going to bore readers. Give your characters personality by changing up the way they speak, the words they use, and even the way they think.

You want to write believable characters...and we aren't a world full of English majors! Use sentence fragments and slang. Drop the "g" at the end of certain words. Give your character a stutter. None of these follow the rules, but they can make a huge impact on the ability of readers to relate to your characters. Sprinkle these rule-breakers in to make your characters more three dimensional and believable.

Just remember that there are certain rules you shouldn't break. Don't start punctuating sentences all willy-nilly. Don't let passive voice take over your story.

You need to have a good grasp of which rules shouldn't be broken and which are free game. This will make you a stronger writer.

Teaser Tuesday: Ravished #suspense #eroticromance

Ravished: The Teplo Trilogy #1

       A disabled ballerina
a deadly new drug
and one h*ll of a bad decision
will change everything for DEA Agent Tristan Riley...

When Tristan Riley drags Lillian Maddox onto the dance floor at Teplo, he intends only to protect his cover… at least that's what he tells himself. But the lovely Lillian would tempt a saint, and Tristan is far from a gentleman. Beneath the bright lights of the Vetrov family's dangerous club, the weary DEA agent finds himself captivated by the ballerina, coaxing them both into a reckless, erotic encounter.

But Tristan isn't prepared for the intense connection between him and Lillian, or for the fallout of their tryst. In a matter of days, their lives careen wildly off course, catapulting them both into a deadly game of hide and seek with the Vetrov family and one of Mexico's deadliest drug cartels.

Trying to keep his hands to himself while working alongside Lillian to stop Anton Vetrov's deadly new drug proves almost impossible for Tristan, but what choice does he have when being with her might get her killed? He should know: his entire family was murdered by people just like Anton.

When the stakes are raised and innocent lives are lost, will Tristan be able to let go of the guilt, or will he destroy his chance at happiness with Lillian before it ever truly begins?

Excerpt
A pair of large hands wrapped around her waist, pulling her upright. She slammed into a hard chest and clung, wrapping her arms around the man's waist without thought. Her face rubbed across the soft fabric of his shirt. A familiar scent, like sage and pine needles, tickled her nose beneath the aroma of hot food wafting through the restaurant. She knew that smell…loved it. But couldn't place it.

"Thank you," she said when her heart slowed its wild hammering. Sliding her hands along her rescuer's sides, she tried to shift her weight from him back onto her feet. His muscles flexed beneath her palms, rippling as if in response to the path her hands took.

"If you don't stop touching me like that, I'm going to fuck you right here, Lillian," a familiar voice rasped in her ear.

She gasped, her head shooting upward.

Tristan's bright blue gaze met hers, his teeth gritted as if in pain.

"Tristan?" she half mouthed, half squeaked.

"Hello, sweetheart."

Lillian stared at him, dazed. In the full light of the restaurant, he looked even better than he had beneath the strange lights of Teplo. His jaw was sharp beneath the stubble, his lips full and kissable. Long lashes framed those beautiful eyes…eyes full of wicked desire. His dark hair was riotous, as if he'd run his hands through it. He seemed a lot bigger, too. Not bulky, but made of lean, contoured muscle. The blue t-shirt he wore wasn't tight, but every time he took a breath, the fabric stretched, hinting at the fit body beneath. Even in jeans and that t-shirt, he was gorgeous.

Memories of the night before hit Lillian like a fist.

Tristan’s hard body pressed against her…

His voice in her ear and his hand beneath her skirt…

She licked her lips, wetting them.

Her hands were still pressed against his stomach, her fingers running along the ridges of his abdominals.

He glanced down, following the play of her fingers over his muscles. "You're killing me, beautiful," he groaned, setting her away from him with obvious reluctance.

Lillian jerked backward, her face flaming, and nearly lost her balance again. She righted herself as quick as she could, far too aware of the man in front of her and the way her heart threatened to beat out of her chest.

Quiet chatter and the clink of silverware on glass resumed all around them.

"You okay?" he asked, his eyes narrowing on her face as if he'd just noticed the tears drying on her lashes. He reached out as if to touch her, and then dropped his hand back to his side.

Lillian remembered her tears at the same time. Mortification fired through her.

"Fine," she mumbled, stepping around him. "Thanks for saving me." She all but fled toward the bathroom, not looking back. Once inside, she slammed the door closed, and took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart.
Tristan was here. In the same damn restaurant.

What were the chances?

She limped toward the sink. Her pale face stared back at her from the mirror hanging above the vanity, looking anything but calm and composed. She looked, well, she looked wild. Tears still clung to her lashes. Faint shadows marred the skin beneath her wide, watery eyes. Fine strands of her dark hair had come loose from the ponytail she'd tossed it into, and her cheeks were flushed.

She looked just like she had when she'd stumbled home from Teplo the night before.

"Shit," she mumbled, turning the faucet on full blast.

The door creaked open behind her.

Lillian squeezed her eyes closed when Tristan appeared in the mirror, a concerned frown hovering on his full lips. But not looking at him didn't make him go away. His footfalls echoed in the small bathroom as he moved toward her. Heat crackled along her spine, loosening something inside of her: that wild, wanton woman he'd woken last night.

"Lillian." His velvety voice was level and intoxicating at once.

She opened her eyes, gripping the sink with both hands as he stepped up behind her, so close his hips touched her bottom, trapping her between his hard body and the sink. His gaze locked on hers in the mirror, blue fire mingling with concern. Heat wound through her as his body brushed against hers.

Slowly, oh so slowly, she turned toward him. "Hi," she whispered, tilting her face back to look up at him.

He reached out, ran a single fingertip down her cheek. "You were crying."

"No, I–" She broke off and licked her lips when his frown deepened. "It's been a rough day."

He stared at her for a long moment, and then nodded once, his fingertip still traveling, inch by inch, down the side of her face and onto her neck. She tilted her head, unable to stay still when her stomach fluttered and her legs trembled, urging her to melt into him.

Flashes from the night before played through her mind…his hands roaming her body in the eerie, unreal light pulsing around them. The soft hitch of his breath. The feel of his lips moving over hers.

Despite everything she'd told herself this morning, she still wanted him. Desperately.

"I want to kiss you," he murmured, cupping her neck in his hand.

"Please?" she pleaded before she could stop herself or think her way out of taking what she wanted from him.

Tristan didn't wait for her to change her mind. He dipped his head, bringing his mouth to hers.

A soft sigh tumbled from her lips.

He guided her closer with the pressure of his hand on her neck, pulling her body into his until they were pressed together in one long line. His lips whispered against hers until she parted them and let him in.

She curled a fist into his shirt.

He lapped at her mouth as warmth became heat, fire…liquid flame rushing through her in an explosive rush. Their tongues came together in their own choreographed dance for long minutes as they melted into one another, lost to everything but the way they moved together.

His breath quickened.

Her heart pounded.

Reality slipped away from her.

He didn't stop kissing her, instead pulling her closer, closer, until not even air moved between them. The heat of his body called to her, the urgency of his kisses making her tremble.

"Goddamn, beautiful," he groaned into her mouth, running his hands all over her. His confident touch made her moan and shudder in his arms. "I want you."

That sexy, guttural confession pulled her up short. She froze, memory intruding into that star-filled place every brush of his hands against her body threatened to take her.

Know Your Team #writingadvice

Since I published my first book in 2012, I've realized that not everyone shows up for the right reasons. There are even people in my own family who LOVE to tell everyone how I'm a bestselling author, but have never picked up or read a single book. They appear each time I release a new title and parade me out to say they know me...yet they know nothing about me. Couldn't tell you the first thing about what I write, why I write it, or who I am as a person.⠀

I don't feel guilty for not making room in my life for people like that. You shouldn't either.⠀

You don't owe them gratitude for knowing you exist. You don't owe them thanks for speaking your name. You don't owe them anything beyond common human decency.⠀

Focus your energy on those who support you, no matter what. Those who challenge you to grow, no matter what. Those who genuinely want the best for you, no matter what. THOSE are your people. Value them. Give THEM y
our time, attention, loyalty, and energy.⠀

Because THOSE are the people who are going to be there for you, no matter what. Who will fight for you, no matter what. Who will LOVE you, no matter what. You owe THEM the same respect and support... the same gratitude and commitment.⠀

You owe NOTHING to the others. They aren't your people. Let them go. ðŸ’™

Netflix and Chill: Tristan and Lillian Style #teplotrilogy #bookcharacters

Tristan and Lillian's Watch List

Tristan and Lillian don't spend a lot of time in front of the television, but when they do have time, they love to snuggle up and watch their favorite shows and movies... or not watch them as the case may be! Here's what's on their lists and why.

Tristan

·         Narcos – This is a new series, but it's surprisingly good. It captures the messed up reality of drug trafficking, while humanizing the people behind the scenes.
·         Arrow – A man with a past? A man on a mission? That's not familiar at all!
·         From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series – Because it's a cartel of vampires. Which is basically every cartel ever. Tristan can relate.
·         Three Kings – Risking everything to screw a bad guy and save a life? Tristan is down with that.
·         Without a Paddle – Even the most ridiculous of missions can have value.
·         Beowulf – Lillian is slowly showing Tristan the value of literature and the classics.
·         Gangland – Gangs piss Tristan off. It never hurts to spend a little time getting to know them better, especially in his line of work.
·         Inside Cocaine Wars – Another docu-series about the job. Getting to know some of the other agents with the same mission is always helpful.

Lillian

·         Phantom of the Opera – What isn't to love about Phantom of the Opera? The story is haunting, beautiful, and timeless.
·         Center Stage – If anyone can relate to being told they aren't good enough, Lillian can. Jody is so much like her.
·         Cyberbully – Another one that hits close to home for Lillian. Bullies are everywhere, and they are brutal.
·         Dollhouse – Echo is a total badass. And she's not what anyone expects.
·         The Originals – Two words: Joseph Morgan. Does she really need another reason?
·         Being Human (U.K.) – The original U.K. version is the way to go with this one. It's got a little bit of everything, and is so good.
·         Ballet 422 – She may no longer be in the world, but she misses performing. This documentary lets her relive those moments she loved.
·         Half the Sky – Lillian has traveled the world and seen oppression firsthand. This documentary tells the story well, and gives her hope for the future.

Writing Sprints

Happy Writer Wednesday!

If you're like me, you struggle to focus for long periods of time. The internet is so distracting! So is basically everything else when I'm trying to write a book! Writing in sprints has helped me tremendously.

I set a timer (usually for 25 minutes) and focus only on writing during that time. I don't edit, check email, look at Facebook, go find a snack, etc. I just write. When time is up, I give myself a break and go do something else for a little bit before tackling another sprint.

It keeps me focused, keeps me on track, and keeps me from spending all my writing time researching or editing. If I need to look something up later, I just make a quick note in the margins and then move along.

Fight for You Exclusive Excerpt #teasers #bookteasers #romance

Happy Teaser Tuesday!

I haven't shared much from Fight for You with you guys yet, but wanted to share a little teaser today.

One of my absolute favorite things about this book is getting to watch the relationship between Michael and January unfold over the years. There's something so damn sweet about young love!

EXCERPT

"Don't cry, baby girl," I plead with her. "Please don't cry."

"I'm sorry," she sobs, clinging to me.

"What happened?" I ask, rubbing her back in an attempt to calm her down.

"He found my birth control," she chokes out between sobs, still hiding her face in my throat.
My hands freeze on her back as soon as I process her words.

"Shit," I mutter, not sure what to say to that. No wonder he tackled me. He thinks I'm sleeping with his little sister.

She and I aren't having sex, but since she turned sixteen a few months ago, she's been pushing the issue. Holding her off is getting harder by the day. I want her so badly it hurts. I'm trying to do the right thing, but then she crawls into my lap, and all the reasons why we need to wait fall away. It's come close a few times before I was able to get myself under control, but I'm not sure how much longer that's going to last.

I'm constantly hard for her.

"He hates you now and it's all my fault," she sobs. "I ruined your friendship!"

"He doesn't hate me," I tell her, hoping like hell he doesn't make a liar out of me. "And you didn't ruin our friendship. He's just worried about you."

Mandy thought she was pregnant about a year ago, and it freaked Titan the hell out. He's probably thinking about that, and worried that January will end up where he thought he was back then. I know Titan better than I know myself sometimes. He adores the girl currently clinging to me like her life depends on it. He always says that she's going to be the one who gets out of here and does something great with her life. There's no way he'd be okay with her getting pregnant at sixteen.

Hell, there's no way I'd be okay with her getting pregnant at sixteen. We're too fucking young to have kids. Between school, taking care of Ma Rose, keeping Kaleo from claiming this block, and all the shit that goes hand-in-hand with that responsibility, I barely have time to see my girl. There's no way I could juggle a kid on top of it. And there's no way I'm letting her jeopardize her future by becoming a teen mom. That's exactly why we decided that she needed to be on birth control. That's why I carry a condom everywhere I go. I'm not taking any chances.

Eventually, I know I won't be able to tell her no anymore. It's already hard as hell to keep pulling us back from the edge. As soon as I feel her soft hands on my body or she pulls her shirt off and puts my hands on her little body, I lose track of everything but her. I want her more than she knows. But when we finally do take that step, I want us both to be prepared.

"He's so mad at me."

"You were throwing shit at him, January." I don't mention the definite handprint across his cheek.

"Only because he said he was going to kill you!" she cries.

I shake my head, bemused at how upset she is over that. It's equal parts adorable and ridiculous. I love her for wanting to fight for me, but damn. She's five-two, and about one hundred and ten pounds soaking wet. If Titan really wanted to kill me, it'd take a hell of a lot more than a couple of well-aimed remotes to stop him. He lived up to his name. He's linebacker big, with a temper to match.

"I love you for trying to defend me," I tell her, tipping her head back and forcing her to look at me. Seeing the tears still shimmering in those long lashes breaks my heart all over again. She's too beautiful, like a little porcelain doll. She was made for laughter, not tears. "But no more throwing shit at him. He could have hurt you."

"He'd never hurt me," she protests, jumping to his defense.

"He'd never hurt you on purpose," I agree before she gets herself all wound up, trying to defend him this time. I swear to God, she's like a little lioness sometimes, so damn protective of me and Titan, it's absurd. What she thinks she's protecting us from when we run this fucking block and are over twice her size, I don't know. But she tries anyway. "He could have easily hurt you by accident, and then you'd both feel terrible."

"Okay," she agrees and then buries her face in my throat once more. She's not crying anymore though, thank God.

I close my eyes and just hold her for a little while. She's so soft and sweet. Her little body fits with mine like she was made to cradle my larger frame. She's soft where I'm hard. If there's anything better in the world than the feel of her in my arms, I don't know if I'll survive finding it. This is perfection enough for one man.

ABOUT FIGHT FOR YOU

Some men deserve redemption. Some men are worthy of salvation. I'm not one of them. My name is Michael Kincaid, and I've got so much blood on my hands, I'll never wash clean.

For ten years, I've tried to outrun my gangbanger past by burying myself in my work with the DEA. I've tried like hell to forget the day I damned my soul and lost everything…my family, my home, and the only girl I've ever loved.

I still can't outrun it.

No matter how far I go, January James haunts me. Being without her is killing me, but what other choice do I have? We were still kids the first time I vowed to protect her. Instead, I destroyed her.

Now one of my enemies—a local gang member—has it out for her. He isn't going to stop until she gives him the territory I left her all those years ago. I swore I'd never set foot in Los Angeles again, but January needs my protection, and I'm not nearly strong enough to say no.

She deserves better than me, but she's mine anyway. It's time to stop running and fight for her.

She's an angel. I'm the devil on her shoulder. And this is my swan song.

When it's over, I'll either be the monster at the end of this book…or I'll be the man she deserves.

Fight for You is the first book in a series of interconnected full-length novels featuring law enforcement officers willing to do whatever it takes to protect the women who need them most. Each book can be read as a standalone, has no cheating, and a guaranteed HEA.

What is Restorative Justice?

Happy Writer Wednesday!

The term "Restorative Justice" tends to make the rounds every few years as THE new thing to do. But it's certainly not a new concept. It's been practiced in varying forms throughout the world for a long time.

So...what the heck is it?

Well, unlike a punitive or retributive model of justice, a restorative model seeks to rehabilitate offenders and restore them as functioning members of society. This is done through things such as victim/offender mediation, community service, circle sentencing (where the victim and offender both participate in deciding a fair sentence), family counseling and rehabilitation programs, etc.

Is it successful?

Sometimes, yes! It's been used around the world and is often quite successful. But that doesn't mean it's always the best or most logical choice. Everything from the type of law a nation uses, to the way a nation interprets or views restorative justice to regional and cultural issues and differences can drastically impact what types of restorative justice are used, if they are successful, and even if they are measurable.

Fun Facts about the Teplo Trilogy

In the Teplo Trilogy, a DEA agent falls for a disabled ballerina on the dance floor at the night club he's investigating. Determined to keep her safe and do his job, Tristan winds up dragging Lillian into the middle of his investigation. That goes about as well as you'd expect. Tears are shed. Blood is spilled. Things explode (literally!).

The series was pretty challenging to write. I joke that none of it was my idea and I just tried to talk sense into them along the way because that's basically how the writing happened with this one. I'd have it all plotted out…and then they did whatever they wanted to do.

Here are some other fun facts about the series.

·         I wrote the first words of Tristan and Lillian's story over nine years ago. It started out as a short piece of fanfiction…and spiraled from there. Three books and nine years later, it's finally complete!

·         Tristan is the most uncooperative and frustrating character I have ever written. There were many times when my beta team had to talk me down because I was ready to off him.

·         Teplo means heat in the Czech language. The series is pretty steamy, so the word fit perfectly.

·         I'm still embarrassed that my grandma not only read the first two books of the series (sadly, she passed away before the third was complete), but then proceeded to have a conversation with me about her needing a man after reading them. So awkward!

·         One of my grad school professors was instrumental in the early stages of writing this series. He helped me out with the cartel research and advised me along the way. Trying to find a happy medium between reality and fiction was tough at times. He was the voice of reason when I wanted to put a little too much reality into the series.

·         I loved getting to add ballet to the mix in this series. I've always been a huge fan, and it was a lot of fun getting to write a character who danced for a living.

·         Michael Kincaid is probably one of my favorite characters ever, and is always a fan favorite. He's so over-the-top ridiculous at times during this series. I cannot wait until his book comes out later this year and everyone finally gets his story.

·         Lillian is kind of a badass. Tristan has a tendency to bulldoze over everyone and everything, but she stands up to him like a champion. They argue a lot until they finally figure it out, but I love a strong woman who isn't afraid to stand up for herself and what she wants and needs. Her strength is also one of Tristan's favorite things about her.

·         I once lost a job over writing this series. It was a massive drama at the time. I won the appeal. I didn't ask for my job back though. I figured if they were that bent out of shape over what I write, I didn't belong there.

·         Rapture (Book Three) is dedicated to Tevin Campbell. Tristan, Roman, and Michael, three alpha males, team up in the midst of a gang war in the book. They completely annihilated my plot and basically did whatever the 'eff they wanted to do. I blasted Can We Talk for two weeks until they started cooperating. Never negotiate with terrorists! :)
