Know Your Team #writingadvice

Since I published my first book in 2012, I've realized that not everyone shows up for the right reasons. There are even people in my own family who LOVE to tell everyone how I'm a bestselling author, but have never picked up or read a single book. They appear each time I release a new title and parade me out to say they know me...yet they know nothing about me. Couldn't tell you the first thing about what I write, why I write it, or who I am as a person.⠀

I don't feel guilty for not making room in my life for people like that. You shouldn't either.⠀

You don't owe them gratitude for knowing you exist. You don't owe them thanks for speaking your name. You don't owe them anything beyond common human decency.⠀

Focus your energy on those who support you, no matter what. Those who challenge you to grow, no matter what. Those who genuinely want the best for you, no matter what. THOSE are your people. Value them. Give THEM your time, attention, loyalty, and energy.⠀

Because THOSE are the people who are going to be there for you, no matter what. Who will fight for you, no matter what. Who will LOVE you, no matter what. You owe THEM the same respect and support... the same gratitude and commitment.⠀

You owe NOTHING to the others. They aren't your people. Let them go. 💙⠀
