Fight for You: Countdown Teaser #4

"Are you drunk, baby girl?" I ask, my voice soft. Clenching my hands into tight fists, I try to keep myself from snatching her up. Part of me wants to spank her ass for getting wasted with no one except her equally as drunk friend here to take care of her. The other part desperately wants to know what she's like when she's drinking. Is she a happy drunk? A horny drunk? I don't know. Titan and I never let her drink. She was too young.

Tears well in her eyes. "Don't call me that," she whispers.

"Why not?" I whisper back, fighting like hell to stay where I'm at instead of wiping those tears away.

"Because I'm not yours anymore. You didn't want me."

"Fuck."

She nudges Mariah, forcing her to open the door wider. Even as two tears slip down her flushed cheeks, her eyes narrow and her nose scrunches up. She sways on her feet before grasping the doorframe to keep herself upright. If she wasn't so goddamn beautiful, the glare she shoots me then would be killer.

"You came back for another woman," she says, a thousand different emotions flowing through those emerald eyes too quickly for me to read. "I prayed so many times for you to come back for me, but you never did. You came back here for her."

What the fuck is she talking about?

"Baby girl–"

"Don't call me that!" she screams at me, her voice so loud it borders on shrill.

I snap my mouth closed. Turns out, drunk January is feisty and a little bit frightening. And I don't have the first clue how to handle her like this.

About Fight for You

Some men deserve redemption. Some men are worthy of salvation. He's not one of them.
Ten years ago, former gangbanger turned DEA agent Michael "Cade" Kincaid lost everything that mattered to him. With his life in tatters, he fled Los Angeles, leaving behind January James, the only girl he's ever loved. Now an enemy from his past has it out for January, and it's up to Michael to save her life.
"Just breathe" reads his tattoo. But how do you breathe when you feel like dying?
January James swore she would never forgive Michael Kincaid for what happened ten years ago, but now he's the only thing standing between her and the gang that wants the neighborhood she vowed to defend. With him in her personal space at every turn, keeping her defenses in place isn't so easy. He might not be the same boy he was then, but he still has the power to destroy her.
"Stay strong" reads her tattoo. But how do you stay strong when you feel like breaking?
Reunited by danger, bound together by feelings that just won't die, and desperate for forgiveness they don't believe they deserve, Michael and January will risk their lives to break free of the past. To build a future, they'll both risk the only thing that really matters: their hearts.
WARNING: Fight for You is an angsty and emotional friends-to-lovers, second chance romance and is not suitable for all readers. It is the first book in a series of interconnected full-length standalone novels featuring law enforcement officers willing to do whatever it takes to protect the women who need them most. Each book has no cheating, and a guaranteed HEA.

Fight for You: Countdown Teaser #3

When I get to my house, Ma Rose is sitting on the front porch, drinking her coffee.

"Hey, sweet boy," she says, smiling at me when I jog up the steps and drop my backpack by the front door.

"Hi, Ma Rose." I lean down and kiss her wrinkled cheek. She's aged a lot in the last few years. Her hair is completely gray and she's lost a lot of weight. She looks frail, but she's still full of energy. She says the weight loss was good for her, but it worries me.

"January went running by here about five minutes ago," she observes quietly, holding my gaze. She knows something is up, so there's no point even trying to hide it from her. How she always knows when something's going on, I don't know, but she does. Trying to hide anything from her is impossible. It's easier to just tell the truth and get it over with.

"Yeah," I mumble and tip my head backward, closing my eyes. "She kissed me."

"Did she?"

"Yeah, then she ran off."

"Hmm."

Hmm?

What is that supposed to mean?

I tip my head forward and crack my eyes open to find her smiling at me over the rim of her coffee cup. She doesn't seem disappointed or mad. Maybe a little worried…but there's also a touch of amusement twinkling in her eyes.

"You're not mad about it?" I ask, just to make sure.

"You've been in love with that little girl for years," she says with a laugh.

I shrug, my cheeks burning. Like I said, Ma Rose knows everything. I didn't even realize I love January until recently, but Ma Rose knew. She may be old and frail, but her mind is as sharp as a tack.

"Just promise me that you'll wait until she's older to do anything more than kiss her," she says, reaching out to wrap my hand in hers. "You're both too young for any nonsense, you hear me? I don't want you making Jana a grandmamma before January's even out of high school."

"Yes ma'am," I mumble, blushing again. It's not even like that. Well, I mean maybe I want to do that stuff with her one day, but not right now. She's way too young. Her mom would kill both of us. Actually, Titan would kill me and then her mom would kill her. Either way, there would be bodies to hide. I'd prefer to keep both of our bodies intact. Plus, I plan to be with her for a long time, so we don't need to rush anything. I just want to keep her safe and make her smile. And maybe hold her and make out with her sometimes. That's all.

Fight for You: Countdown Teaser #2

"I heard a rumor," Mariah Dupree announces, plopping her curvy ass down on the corner of my desk.

I peer up at her through bleary eyes and wait for her to fill me in. Mariah's a bit of a drama queen when it comes to gossip, but I love her anyway. She's the only thing that keeps me sane most days. She's been my best friend since the sixth grade. We went to the same college, teach at the same elementary school, and do everything together.

"Michael Kincaid is back in town," she says, watching my face like a hawk. With her black hair up in a demure bun and her glasses perched on her nose, she looks more like a naughty librarian than a kindergarten teacher. Her ebony skin is flawless.

"Oh, that." I slide out of my chair and squeeze past her, busying myself with collecting the worksheets my students left on their desks at the end of the day. Most of them are illegible, but that's okay. School's been in session for two weeks. I don't expect perfection, especially not from a bunch of five-year-olds, most of whom have never even tried to hold a pencil before. Knowing they're trying so hard makes me happy.

"Oh, that?" Mariah repeats from behind me. "That's all you have to say?"

I shrug a shoulder and continue weaving throughout the room, picking up the worksheets and straightening desks as I go. I'm not sure what else she expects me to say. Okay, that's not true. I know exactly what she wants to hear, but I don't have the mental or emotional energy to invest in this conversation right now. The last two days have been utter hell. I've been out of it, barely holding it together.

"You saw him, didn't you?" she asks.

"He caught some kid trying to break into my house Wednesday night," I mutter.

"Goddammit, January!"

I spin to face her, shocked at how loud she is, only to find her with her hands on her hips and a scowl on her face. In her heels, she's a good six inches taller than I am at five-two. Her button nose is scrunched, her perfectly penciled brows furrowed.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she demands, hurt flashing in her brown eyes.

I shrug.

"Are you okay?"

"He didn't get inside." I place the worksheets on top of the desk beside me and then lean against the wall. Pushing my blonde hair out of my face, I sigh heavily. "Cade stopped him before he got that far."

"Are you okay?" she repeats, and I know she's not asking about the attempted break-in this time. She's asking about Cade. She's the only person in the world who knows our history. When he left me, she was the one who put me back together again.

Am I okay?

"Hell no," I whisper, unable or unwilling to lie to my best friend.

Fight for You: Countdown Teaser #1

"Why can't you ever just stay home?" Titan glares at me.

I bite my lip, refusing to tell him that I'm scared. He'll just call me a crybaby, and I don't want Cade to think I'm a chicken, even though I really am.

"She can come with us," Cade says with a shrug before I can think of a reason. He smiles, showing me his dimples. "You'll be good, right, baby girl?"

I nod and bounce up and down.

"Fine," Titan says with a scowl, "but I'm not playing any stupid baby games with you. And you can't follow me around."

"I don't play baby games and I don't follow you around!" I stick my tongue out at him. I don't follow him around. Mostly, I follow Cade around, but I don't tell Titan that. He'd just laugh at me. Sometimes, he's a jerk.

"Whatever." Titan rolls his eyes and locks the front door before jumping from the porch to the sidewalk. He's such a showoff.

I bounce down the steps, only to trip on the last one.

"Careful," Cade says, grabbing me before I fall. He always catches me when I trip. Mom says I'd be a mess without him. She's probably right. I'm kind of clumsy.

Titan snorts before stomping down the sidewalk.

I don't know why he's so mean to me now. He used to like to play with me. Him and Cade always watched out for me and made sure no one messed with me. But ever since he started the eighth grade, he's been different. He's mean to me a lot. I don't know why, but I wish he was nice again. I miss him.

"Why are you so quiet, baby girl?" Cade asks, tugging on a strand of my hair.

I like it when he calls me that. Titan says he does it because I'm just a baby, but I don't think that's why. He always calls me that. It's sweet. Titan's just jealous he doesn't have a nickname like me and Cade do. I call him Cade because when I was younger, I couldn't say his name right. It sounded funny. He says he likes his nickname better anyway.

"Why doesn't Titan like me anymore?" I whisper to him, staring down at the ground.

"He likes you," Cade promises me, reaching out to tug on my hair again. "He's just grumpy because Mandy won't kiss him."

"He's always mean to me." I scrunch up my nose at the thought of my brother and Mandy kissing. She's pretty, but she's not very nice. She's always watching Cade like she'd rather have him flirting with her than Titan. But she holds my brother's hand and calls him all the time, so I think maybe she likes both of them.

"He loves you, baby girl. He's just being a teenager. I'll talk to him and tell him he needs to be nicer to you."

"You're a teenager too, but you're nice to me."

He stares at me, his blue-gray eyes serious. "I will always be nice to you, January."
