My hands shake as I jog up the wooden steps to her front door. The heavy wood rattles beneath my fist from the force of my knock. My mind screams at me to turn around and walk away. But then the door flies open and she's standing there. She's so heartbreakingly beautiful with those bright green eyes filled to the brim with hope and her lips forming my name like a kiss.

I'm lost. Damned.

Please, God, don't let me destroy her, I pray silently. Don't let me ruin her life all over again.

"You're wrong," I blurt out, my pulse pounding so hard I'm sure she can probably hear it. "You think I don't want you, but I'm so fucking hard for you that it hurts, baby girl. I've wanted nothing but you since the day I left. You think you weren't living without me? I was in hell without you. I'm still in hell." My breath comes in a desperate rasp and my hands shake. My whole body is shaking. "Every goddamn day without you was torture, baby girl. I tried to forget you, to move on, but I couldn't. I didn't want to forget…to forget…"

"To forget what?" she whispers when I stumble over the words, not sure how to explain to her that even though she haunted me, I didn't want to forget her.

Because even when I didn't have her, even when I was certain I'd never step foot in this city again because I couldn't face being here without her…she still had me. She still had every fucking piece of me.

"To forget this," I rumble and stalk toward her. It takes two steps to cross the threshold. And one more before she's in my arms. I kick the door closed behind me and then haul her up against my chest.

As soon as she's in my arms, she goes wild. Her body wraps around mine, exactly like she was meant to fit me. Her hands go to my hair, her legs around my waist. Our mouths crash together with such need, such force, that our teeth clack together. I pour everything into our kiss, sucking her tongue into my mouth to steal her breath. I want her air in me, until each breath I take is full of nothing but her.

Fight for You: Countdown Teaser #6

He's breathing hard, his chest rising and falling like he just ran five miles. His eyes meet mine, his expression so severe that it steals my breath all over again. He's definitely all man now, grown up and so powerful. It's honestly a little breathtaking to see him like this. With his hair all messed up, his cheeks flushed, and his eyes on fire, he's the sexiest thing I've ever seen in my life.

"Go inside, January," he rumbles when I lick my lips, savoring the taste of him on them.

"Cade, I–"

"Now!" he barks.

I jump at the loud crack of sound. Tears fill my eyes, rejection burning through me hot and fast.

His thunderous expression softens. He reaches out and tugs gently on a strand of my hair, exactly like he always did when we were kids and he wanted to comfort me. The corner of his lip turns up in a sardonic half smile. "I'm the last thing you need. I'll just fuck up your life all over again," he whispers and then he turns and jogs down the steps.

"You were the only thing I ever needed," I whisper to his back.

He hesitates for a split second, pausing mid-step, then he shakes his head. "Maybe one day I'll be the kind of man you deserve, but I'm not him now, January. I'm still the monster at the end of this book. I always have been."

"You're wrong."

His heavy sigh speaks volumes, and each one of them shatters another little piece of my heart.

"Every goddamn day without you was wrong, baby girl," he whispers, his voice rough with pain. "That doesn't make this right. I already destroyed you once. I won't do it again now."

"You laughing at me, baby girl?" he asks, lifting a brow and shooting me a smirk that does crazy things to my insides.

"Nope," I lie and then clap a hand over my mouth when a giggle escapes.

He growls playfully and reaches over to tickle my ribcage, which makes me shriek with laughter.

"I wasn't laughing!" I cry, swatting at his hand as he continues to tickle me mercilessly.

"You were," he chuckles and then takes pity on me. His eyes are more gray than blue today, his happiness evident as he grins at me, those dimples on full display. "But that's okay. I fucking love that sweet little laugh of yours. It's my second favorite sound in the world. You can laugh at me anytime, so long as I get to hear you do it."

Butterflies flutter through my stomach and my mouth gets dry. God, he's so sweet to me. It's no wonder the older girls at school all hate me. If I had to watch him be this sweet to some other girl, I'd be jealous too.

"What's your favorite sound?" I ask, my voice a little breathless as he starts the car.

"The way you whisper my name after I kiss you," he says, completely serious.

My entire body melts. If I didn't already love him, I'm pretty sure that would have sealed the deal. But I do love him. Like crazy. Everyone says I'm too young to even know what that means, but they're wrong. I'm head over heels for Michael Ian Kincaid.

Fight for You: Countdown Teaser #4

FOLLOW ALONG THROUGH EVERY DAY OF THE COUNTDOWN FOR TEASERS! LEAVE A COMMENT TO WIN BOOK SWAG AND EBOOKS!

"Are you drunk, baby girl?" I ask, my voice soft. Clenching my hands into tight fists, I try to keep myself from snatching her up. Part of me wants to spank her ass for getting wasted with no one except her equally as drunk friend here to take care of her. The other part desperately wants to know what she's like when she's drinking. Is she a happy drunk? A horny drunk? I don't know. Titan and I never let her drink. She was too young.

Tears well in her eyes. "Don't call me that," she whispers.

"Why not?" I whisper back, fighting like hell to stay where I'm at instead of wiping those tears away.

"Because I'm not yours anymore. You didn't want me."

"Fuck."

She nudges Mariah, forcing her to open the door wider. Even as two tears slip down her flushed cheeks, her eyes narrow and her nose scrunches up. She sways on her feet before grasping the doorframe to keep herself upright. If she wasn't so goddamn beautiful, the glare she shoots me then would be killer.

"You came back for another woman," she says, a thousand different emotions flowing through those emerald eyes too quickly for me to read. "I prayed so many times for you to come back for me, but you never did. You came back here for her."

What the fuck is she talking about?

"Baby girl–"

"Don't call me that!" she screams at me, her voice so loud it borders on shrill.

I snap my mouth closed. Turns out, drunk January is feisty and a little bit frightening. And I don't have the first clue how to handle her like this.

Fight for You: Countdown Teaser #3

FOLLOW ALONG THROUGH EVERY DAY OF THE COUNTDOWN FOR TEASERS! LEAVE A COMMENT TO WIN BOOK SWAG AND EBOOKS!

When I get to my house, Ma Rose is sitting on the front porch, drinking her coffee.

"Hey, sweet boy," she says, smiling at me when I jog up the steps and drop my backpack by the front door.

"Hi, Ma Rose." I lean down and kiss her wrinkled cheek. She's aged a lot in the last few years. Her hair is completely gray and she's lost a lot of weight. She looks frail, but she's still full of energy. She says the weight loss was good for her, but it worries me.

"January went running by here about five minutes ago," she observes quietly, holding my gaze. She knows something is up, so there's no point even trying to hide it from her. How she always knows when something's going on, I don't know, but she does. Trying to hide anything from her is impossible. It's easier to just tell the truth and get it over with.

"Yeah," I mumble and tip my head backward, closing my eyes. "She kissed me."

"Did she?"

"Yeah, then she ran off."

"Hmm."

Hmm?

What is that supposed to mean?

I tip my head forward and crack my eyes open to find her smiling at me over the rim of her coffee cup. She doesn't seem disappointed or mad. Maybe a little worried…but there's also a touch of amusement twinkling in her eyes.

"You're not mad about it?" I ask, just to make sure.

"You've been in love with that little girl for years," she says with a laugh.

I shrug, my cheeks burning. Like I said, Ma Rose knows everything. I didn't even realize I love January until recently, but Ma Rose knew. She may be old and frail, but her mind is as sharp as a tack.

"Just promise me that you'll wait until she's older to do anything more than kiss her," she says, reaching out to wrap my hand in hers. "You're both too young for any nonsense, you hear me? I don't want you making Jana a grandmamma before January's even out of high school."

"Yes ma'am," I mumble, blushing again. It's not even like that. Well, I mean maybe I want to do that stuff with her one day, but not right now. She's way too young. Her mom would kill both of us. Actually, Titan would kill me and then her mom would kill her. Either way, there would be bodies to hide. I'd prefer to keep both of our bodies intact. Plus, I plan to be with her for a long time, so we don't need to rush anything. I just want to keep her safe and make her smile. And maybe hold her and make out with her sometimes. That's all.
