Colons and Capitalization

Happy Writer Wednesday!

Colons are powerful tools, but in fiction writing, should be used as sparingly as possible. Colons are most frequently used to join two independent clauses, as well as to start lists and introduce quotes.

When using to start a list, don't capitalize the first letter of the first word after the colon unless it's a proper noun.

When using a colon to join two independent clauses, capitalize the first letter of the first word after the colon if it's a proper noun or if the clause is a complete sentence. Don't capitalize the first letter of the first word if the clause isn't a complete sentence.

Ayden
