@TM_Franklin's Ten Rules for Dating a Superhero and Author Interview

Today, the amazing T.M. Franklin has stopped by to chat with us about her upcoming YA novel, MORE, and to give us her ten rules for dating a superhero. If you haven't heard about MORE yet, you're probably living under a rock. ;)

MORE is the story of Ava Michaels, who might just be as special as she once believed. And of Caleb Foster, who is definitely more than he appears to be.

Together, Ava and Michael face an ancient threat intent on exposing her secrets in their quest to capture or kill her. MORE is currently available for pre-order on TWCS, and will be released from The Writer' Coffee Shop Publishing House on October, 4, 2012.

Ava Michaels used to think she was special. As a child, she fantasized about having magical powers . . . making things happen. She felt different from others her age, and just knew she was meant for something important. But, like most kids, Ava grew up and eventually accepted the fact that her childish dreams were just that, and maybe a normal life wasn't so bad after all.

Now a young college student, Ava begins to wonder if there were more to her childhood fantasies than she thought. She’s haunted by terrifying nightmares of a frightening man chasing her, determined to catch her, to take her—a huge hulk of a man with one blue eye and one green. Even during daylight hours, there are moments her hair stands on end with an uneasy prickle of awareness . . . and she just can’t shake the feeling that she’s being watched.

Unable to decide if she’s imagining things or just plain crazy, Ava finds an unlikely ally in Caleb Foster, a brilliant and mysterious man who comes to her rescue as a Physics tutor, but in reality has another mission in mind. What he shows Ava challenges her view of the world, shaking it to its very core.

The thing is, Caleb’s not quite what he seems. In fact, he's not entirely human, and he's not the only one.

Together, the duo faces a threat from an ancient race bound to protect humans, but only after protecting their own secrets—secrets they fear Ava may expose. Now they’re after her, bent on her capture or maybe even her extinction.

Fighting to survive, Ava has to depend on Caleb to lead her through the strange new world opening up before her. A world of magic and mystery, where she learns she’s not
actually normal . . . she's not even just special.

She's a little bit more.

Let's see what T.M. has in store for us today! :)

Dating a Superhero

No, Caleb in MORE is not a superhero, per se, but he does have some unusual abilities. Maybe Ava can adapt some of these rules for her own use. J

1. Remember, he’s a man first, and super second. So he’s going to leave the toilet seat up on occasion.

2. Always wash his tights on the delicate cycle, and let them air dry, people!

3. A Batarang is not a suitable alternative for a cheese slicer. Same goes for using Mjolnir to tenderize a flank steak.

4. A secret identity should remain just that: A secret. So don’t go taking his glasses off at a party just because you like his eyes.

5. Don’t keep asking him, “What am I thinking now?”

6. Don’t nag him for staying out late. He’s saving the world! And yeah, Wonder Woman is hot, but if he says it’s all business, give him the benefit of the doubt. Trust and communication are key in any relationship.

7. Do not use the Silver Surfboard to run down to Starbucks for a pumpkin spice latte.

8. Learn to notice the difference between regular vision and x-ray vision. You’ll figure out when he’s just looking at that woman…and when he’s looking at her.

9. Don’t wear his mask without asking. They’re kind of weird about that.

10.  If you’re going to ask him to wear the cape in the bedroom, be prepared to put on a French maid uniform once in a while. A relationship is about give and take. Just saying.

Love the rules, T.M. I'll have to keep them in mind should Batman ever decide to give Robin up in lieu of me. ;)

Now it's time to put T.M. in the hotseat and ask her a few questions about life, writing, MORE, and being a superhero.

Author Interview

MORE releases in just a few days! Are you nervous?

That’s putting it mildly. It’s exciting, but nerve-wracking. I’m pretty much a mess!

What can we expect from the story?

It’s not a literary masterpiece. Let me say that right away. I like to think it’s a fun read – something you can take on vacation and read on the beach. I hope people can identify with the characters and find their journey enjoyable. There’s some romance, some magic (not wizardy magic, but paranormal elements), some adventure, and a little bit of mystery and suspense.

You have a magical power. What is it, and what do you do with it?

I’d like to be able to fly. I think that would be amazing. I wouldn’t want to be able to read minds. I think I’d hear things I’d really rather not know. It would be cool to be able to compel people, like Caleb can in MORE. I wouldn’t use it for evil, though. Only for good – like to get bad guys to give up their guns or to get people to help old ladies cross the street. J Maybe to get a free salted caramel cake pop at Starbucks. Maybe. In a weak moment.

What does a perfect day entail for you?

Sleeping in, some really good coffee, time for writing, and then relaxing with my family. Oh, and crème brûlée. Everything’s better with crème brûlée.

What's been your most challenging writing moment to date?

The toughest part of writing MORE was maintaining continuity. In an early draft I had a scene in a pretty mountain meadow with purple flowers. It was lovely, but it was the middle of November! I’m so thankful for my editors who helped me catch things like this. Or just logistical things – like how long it would take to travel from Iowa to the Canadian border, or remembering that places would be decorated for Halloween in the last weeks of October. I find myself getting lost in the story and have to be reminded of these things sometimes.

Who is your fictional crush? Why?

Oh, I have so many – Four from the Divergent series, St. Clair from Anna and the French Kiss, Edward Cullen, Cricket from Lola and the Boy Next Door. I love falling in love with characters! It’s part of what makes reading fun. We experience it the story along with the hero or heroine!

You've been called to save the world... what do you do first?

Get my family together. As long as we’re all together and safe, I’ll be able to think about the rest. Sadly, I’m probably a horrible choice to save the world. I’d probably be most worried about coffee and books first, when I should be thinking about medical supplies and weapons.

Better choose someone like Schwarzenegger. He did pretty well in End of Days.

What's the worst thing you've ever written? The best?

I wrote a novel prior to MORE called The Tip. It’s pretty bad and will most likely never see the light of day. The best thing? Well, I don’t know if it’s the best, but I’m probably most proud of something I wrote called “Turns.” It was angst/tragedy, which is totally out of my wheelhouse and not at all what I’m comfortable writing, and I felt pretty good about how it turned out.

You're stuck on an island... what 3 books would you kill to have with you?

Oh man, that’s a tough one because I’m really not one for re-reading books as a rule. I’d probably say Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon, one of the Stephanie Plum books for a laugh, and the Bible.

Do you have a character you love to hate? Who is it? Why?

Oh, I love a good villain – they’re what make a story interesting! I mean, what would Neo be without Agent Smith? Luke Skywalker without Darth Vader? Sure, you want them to get what they deserve in the end, but the journey is so much fun! Right now, I’d say my favorite villains are on Sons of Anarchy. They do a great job of making the bad guys so. Incredibly. Bad. If you haven’t seen the show, check it out.

Where else can we find you?

I’m all over the place! LoL!

B&N: Coming soon

About the Author:

T.M. Franklin started out her career writing non-fiction in a television newsroom. Graduating with a B.A. in Communications specializing in broadcast journalism and production, she worked for nine years as a major market television news producer, and garnered two regional Emmy Awards, before she resigned to be a full-time mom and part-time freelance writer. After writing and unsuccessfully querying a novel that she now admits, “is not that great,”she decided to follow the advice of one of the agents who turned her down—write some more and get better at it. Her first published novel, MORE, was born during National Novel Writing month, a challenge to write a novel in thirty days.

She lives in the Pacific Northwestwith her husband, Mike, is mom to two boys, Justin and Ryan, and has an enormous black dog named Rocky who’s always lying nearby while she’s writing. Whether he’s soothed by the clicking of the computer keys or just waiting for someone to rub his belly is up for debate.

  3. Seriously, I have my nerves killing me whenever on a date. Not that I'm not used to the opposite sex, but I still go to dating site reviews to check how I can be (somewhat) okay in front of others.
